A study of them revealed that this was Rodin´s personal photographic file and contained a princeless record of his work in progress. A selection of these remarkable prints in here published for the first time. These photographs were crucial to Rodin; he used them not simply ass records and for publicity purposes, but as working material in the very process if making his sculptures. Many are covered with the scribbles and annotations of a man pondering fundamental changes to what have since become his best-known works. Although not himself a photographer, Rodin audaciously used the medium to realize his Pytmalion dream in sculpture. Subjects like The Kiss are seen literally in a new light -that of the studio- and we are very much aware that we are observuing a sculptor at work. The quality of many of the photographs in superb. Rodin empoyed the best photographers of his day to come to his studio and the resulting prints are important contributions to the history of interpretative phiotography. They are works of art in therir own right as well as valuable historical documents. A generous selection is here presented of the most outstanding of these photographs, while Profesor Elsen has provided a historical and critical introduction and has written full explanatory notes.
